Te Au Hūmārika (The Gentle Current)

Te Au Hūmārika (The Gentle Current) is the Māori transitional strategy in place until 2027. It aims to provide a clear sense of belonging for Māori and a place they can thrive in Te Ope Whakaora.

It will be based around the following pou:

  • Developing Māori leadership
  • Ensuring our social services engage effectively and serve tāngata Māori
  • Whare Karakia and supporting Māori to connect to their faith and culture
  • Support for the Corps with tikanga and te reo Māori
  • A Whare Rūnanga

Richard Kerr Bell, Tumu Whakarae (National Director Māori), provides leadership in this area and advocates clear messages, guidance, and leadership about Rūnanga expectations around workforce development, delivery of services, and future potential of Te Tai Hono (his team) in supporting the national cultural and bicultural needs for the whole of Te Ope Whakaora.
